Ten Tips for Painless Weight Loss – Part III

This list of tips focuses on the dietary end of weight loss — but don’t forget you need movement to stay healthy, vital, change the shape of your body, and increase your chances of sustainable weight loss. Most fitness professionals will tell you that diet is 70% to 80% of the battle when you are trying to lose weight. You can’t expect to lose weight if you don’t change the way you eat.  But there are some simple fixes that can save you lots of calories.  Here are our last four tips.

7) Put your fork down — When you slow your roll at the dinner table, you’ll feel fuller with less food. Less food means more pounds lost. When you scarf down your food, you eat more as your body doesn’t have time catch up with you and signal it’s full. You will also get more satisfaction and and greater pleasure from your food this way. One way to do this is to put your fork down between bites — it will make you more aware of what you are putting in your mouth. Also since food pre-digests in your mouth the “I’m full” message gets to your brain closer to real time, so you stop short of overeating. Try this trick — about halfway through your meal, put your fork down and wait a five to ten minutes before continuing — you may find that once the wait is over, you are done too.

8) Brush your teeth —  Have you ever finished a meal and then wanted something even though you’d clearly had enough? Chocolate, a dessert, or a sweet snack? One way to ensure that you don’t continue your meal with mindless comfort eating, is to immediately go brush your teeth with a minty toothpaste. The minty flavor and the particular chemicals in toothpaste give sweet things a slightly bitter taste and make them less appealing. You can also use this tip anytime you are craving an unhealthy snack. And as an added bonus,  you’ll have healthy white teeth!

9) Always carry healthy snacks — You may think snacking is bad for your weight loss efforts, but strategic snacking can actually help. When you get too hungry your blood sugar drops, decreasing your energy and increasing your cravings for carbs and sweets. Head hunger off at the pass by keeping healthy snacks in the car, your briefcase or bag, and in the office when those times arise that you can’t get away for a healthy meal, but need to eat. Going around snack-less, makes fast food, vending machines, and office candy jars look very enticing, making for an unhappy waist line.

10) Eat spicy food —  Spicy foods contain chemical compounds that increase your metabolism, so eating a spicy meal can give you a nice boost to your weight loss efforts. In addition to the metabolic effects, spicy food can make you feel fuller eat more slowly and consume less. Less food = less calories = less fat on your body!
